Trauma: Interlocking Intramedullary Nailing
Course Details
Date: Jun 28, 2026. 7:30 am
Location: Skill Lab, Al Najaf Teaching Hospital
Course Goals
The primary goal is to transition the resident from basic fracture understanding to the precise execution of intramedullary fixation. We emphasize the importance of the starting point, as it dictates the entire trajectory of the nail, and the mastery of Free-hand distal locking—a critical skill in trauma surgery.
Target Participants
- Junior Orthopedic Residents.
- Trauma Fellows looking to refine reaming techniques and complex locking maneuvers.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Determine the Ideal Entry Point for each modality: the greater trochanter for antegrade femur, the intercondylar notch for retrograde femur, and the extra-articular proximal tibia.
- Execute Sequential Reaming while maintaining fracture reduction and protecting the soft tissue envelope.
- Manage Complex Scenarios, such as dynamic vs. static interlocking and the use of Poller (blocking) screws to correct deformity.
Course Highlights
- Dedicated practical time for Tibial, Antegrade Femoral, and Retrograde Femoral nailing.
- Retrograde vs. Antegrade Debate: A clinical seminar on choosing the best approach for distal third femoral fractures and polytrauma patients.
- Complication Prevention: Strategies for avoiding malunion, iatrogenic fractures at the entry site, and hardware failure.
